How much emergency fund is too much? Is 12 months overkill?

I have about ,000 in savings which is roughly 12 months of expenses. My job is stable (healthcare IT) and I have no debt. My friends say Im being too conservative and should invest more of it. But I like knowing its there. Am I losing money by having too much cash or is the peace of mind worth it?

Mathematically you might be leaving some returns on the table. Psychologically you might be doing exactly right. Both matter.

The math case for less:

  • Standard advice is 3-6 months

  • Money in HYSA at 4.5% vs invested at historical 10% = ~5.5% difference

  • On k thats roughly ,300/year in potential gains missed
  • The case for keeping it:

  • Peace of mind has real value

  • You actually sleep well at night

  • Healthcare IT is stable but layoffs happen everywhere

  • You have zero debt and can take more investment risk elsewhere
  • Middle ground suggestion:

  • Keep 6 months (k) in HYSA - covers most emergencies

  • Invest the other 6 months (k) in a conservative taxable brokerage (60% stocks/40% bonds)

  • Still accessible in a true emergency but earns more

But honestly? If 12 months brings you peace and youre investing elsewhere, its not crazy. The "optimal" portfolio means nothing if you panic sell during downturns because you feel insecure.

12 months is not overkill if it helps you sleep at night. Personal finance is personal. I have 9 months and my wife thinks Im paranoid but after 2008 I just feel better having it.

I used to have 12 months too but then I realized my job is super stable (government) and I was basically losing money to inflation. Moved half to I-bonds which are still liquid after a year but earn way more. Maybe a middle ground for you?
