How much screen time is actually okay for a 3 year old?

Every parenting article gives different advice. Some say zero screens, others say 1 hour, some say it depends on content. My 3yo loves watching educational stuff on the iPad and it's honestly the only way I can get anything done some days. Am I damaging her development? What do you actually do with your kids?

I'm a pediatric occupational therapist and also a mom of two, so let me give you both perspectives.

What the research actually says:

  • AAP recommends max 1 hour/day of high-quality programming for ages 2-5

  • Co-watching when possible is better than passive watching

  • Content quality matters more than exact minutes

  • No screens during meals or 1 hour before bed
  • The reality for most parents:
Sometimes it's going to be more than an hour. Sometimes you need to make dinner. That's okay. Occasional extra screen time isn't going to ruin your child.

    What actually matters more:

  • Total daily physical activity (at least 3 hours)

  • Face-to-face interaction with caregivers

  • Sleep quality and quantity

  • Varied play experiences
  • What we do (ages 3 and 5):

  • About 1-1.5 hours on weekdays

  • A bit more on weekends

  • No tablets at restaurants

  • Educational shows only (Bluey, Sesame Street, Daniel Tiger)

  • They have to play outside first
  • Signs you might want to cut back:

  • Meltdowns when screen time ends

  • Preferring screens over other activities

  • Sleep problems

  • Less interest in physical play

You're clearly a thoughtful parent because you're asking. Your kid is going to be fine. The guilt isn't worth it.
