How many bank accounts should I actually have?

I currently just have one checking account where everything goes - paycheck, bills, spending money, everything. My girlfriend thinks Im crazy and has like 5 different accounts. Is there actually a benefit to having multiple accounts or is she overcomplicating things? I feel like I manage fine with one but maybe Im missing something.

Your girlfriend is onto something. Multiple accounts make budgeting way easier. Heres what works for me:

  1. Bills checking - rent, utilities, subscriptions auto-draft from here. I transfer exactly whats needed after each paycheck.

  2. Spending checking - this is my "fun money" for groceries, gas, going out. When its empty, I stop spending.

  3. Emergency fund savings - 3-6 months expenses, dont touch it

  4. Goals savings - vacation fund, car fund, whatever

The magic is you cant accidentally spend your rent money on drinks because its not in the same account. Some people use one account and track everything in spreadsheets but Im not that disciplined. Separate accounts does the work for me.

Doesnt cost anything extra, most banks let you open multiple accounts. Changed my financial life honestly.

Multiple accounts changed my financial life. Bills checking, spending checking, emergency savings, goals savings. Money is automatically sorted and I literally cant overspend rent money on Amazon.

I went from 1 account to 4 and budgeting became effortless. Each account has a job. When spending account is low I know to slow down without checking spreadsheets.
