How do I ask for a raise when my company is doing layoffs?
I've been at my company for 3 years with no raise (just cost of living adjustments). I took on two people's responsibilities when they left last year. I know this is terrible timing with all the tech layoffs, but I'm underpaid by at least $15k compared to market rate. How do I approach this without getting myself on the chopping block?

Tricky situation but not impossible. I'm a former HR manager and here's my advice:
First, assess your position:
- Are you a top performer with documented results?
- Do you have skills that are hard to replace?
- Is your department profitable/essential?
If yes to most of these, you have leverage.
How to approach it:
- Frame it as a market adjustment, not a raise - "I'd like to discuss bringing my compensation in line with market rates."
- Come with data - Use Glassdoor, LinkedIn Salary, and Levels.fyi to show what your role pays elsewhere.
- Document your expanded responsibilities - "When Sarah and Mike left, I absorbed X, Y, Z responsibilities. Here's the impact I've had..."
- Don't threaten to leave - But do mention you've been approached by recruiters (if true).
- Time it right - After a successful project or positive review, not during layoff announcements.
What to say:
"I understand the company is navigating challenges right now, and I want to be part of the solution. I've taken on significantly more responsibility over the past year and delivered [specific results]. I'd like to discuss adjusting my compensation to reflect my current role and market rates."
Worst case, they say no. Best case, you get what you deserve. Either way, you'll know where you stand.
