Got approved for a k credit limit at 21 - is this a trap?
I just got my first real credit card (had a secured card before) and they approved me for a ,000 limit. Im a senior in college working part time making maybe ,200/month. This seems insane? Like why would they give me this much? My friends are telling me its a trap to get me into debt. Should I ask them to lower it or just not use most of it?

Its not a trap exactly, but it is a test of your self control. Credit card companies make money when people overspend and pay interest. They gave you a high limit hoping youll use it and carry a balance.
Heres the thing though - a high limit is actually GOOD for your credit score as long as you dont use much of it. Credit utilization (how much you use vs your limit) is a big factor. Using of a k limit = 4% utilization = great for your score.
Dont ask them to lower it. Just pretend the limit is ,000 or whatever you can actually pay off each month. Set up autopay for the full balance. Never spend more than you have in your checking account.
Ive had a high limit card since college, treated it like a debit card, and it helped me build excellent credit by 25.
High limit is actually good for your credit score because of utilization ratio. Just never spend more than you can pay off. I treat my credit limit like it doesnt exist and only spend what I have in checking.
Set up autopay for the full statement balance right now. That way you literally cant miss a payment or carry a balance. Treat it like a debit card that builds credit.
