Do I actually need life insurance if Im single with no kids?

Im 28, single, no dependents. My job offers basic life insurance (1x salary) but people keep telling me I should buy more. Why would I need life insurance? If I die theres no one depending on my income. Am I missing something or is this just insurance companies trying to sell me stuff I dont need?

Youre mostly right - life insurance is primarily for people with dependents. But there are a few edge cases to consider:

You might need more if:

  • You have co-signed loans (student loans, car) that someone else would be responsible for

  • You have aging parents who might depend on you financially someday

  • You have a mortgage (though it would just be sold)

  • You have significant debt that would burden your estate
  • You probably dont need more if:

  • No co-signed debt

  • No dependents now or planned soon

  • Parents are financially independent

One argument FOR getting it now:
Term life insurance is insanely cheap when youre young and healthy. A k 20-year term policy might be -30/month at 28. If you develop health issues later, it becomes expensive or impossible to get.

My take: your work coverage is fine for now. If you get married or have kids, reassess. Dont let anyone pressure you into whole life insurance though - thats almost always a bad deal.

One thing people dont mention - if you have any co-signed debt (student loans with parents, etc), life insurance can prevent your co-signer from being stuck with the bill. Otherwise at 28 with no dependents you really dont need it.

Counterpoint to everyone saying skip it - I got a 20 year term policy at 26 for like /month. Now Im 34 with some health issues and couldnt get approved at any reasonable rate. Locking in insurability while young has value.
