What camera should a complete beginner buy to learn photography?

I want to get into photography as a hobby but I'm overwhelmed by options. Some people say just use your phone, others say buy mirrorless, some say start with DSLR. Budget is around $500-800 including a lens. I mainly want to take photos of landscapes, my dog, and while traveling.

I teach photography workshops and this is the most common question I get. Here's my honest advice:

For your budget and goals, go mirrorless. Here's why:

  • Mirrorless is the future (even Canon/Nikon abandoned DSLR)

  • Lighter for travel

  • What you see in viewfinder = what you get

  • Excellent autofocus for your dog
  • Best options in your budget:

    1. Sony a6100 with kit lens (~$750)

    2. - Incredible autofocus, great for pets
      - Huge lens selection for later
      - Will last you years

    3. Canon EOS R50 (~$700)

    4. - Very user-friendly
      - Great colors out of camera
      - Good video too

    5. Nikon Z50 (~$700)

    - Excellent image quality
    - Weather-resistant
    - Great ergonomics

All of these will serve you well. Honestly pick based on which one feels best in your hands.

"Just use your phone" people are half-right:

Modern phones take great photos. But a dedicated camera gives you:

  • Better low light performance

  • Real depth of field (blurry backgrounds)

  • Optical zoom

  • The experience of learning photography
  • What to spend on:

  • Camera body with kit lens: $600-750

  • Extra battery: $30

  • SD card (64GB): $15

  • Later: A 35mm or 50mm prime lens (game changer)
  • What NOT to buy:

  • Camera bags (use any bag)

  • UV filters (mostly useless)

  • Every accessory the store suggests

The best camera is the one you'll actually carry and use. Any of these options will teach you photography well.
