Is PC gaming actually worth it over console or is it just hype?
I'm thinking about either getting a PS5 or building a gaming PC. Everyone online says PC is better but it seems way more expensive and complicated. I mainly play single player games and some shooters with friends. Worth the extra cost or is that just PC elitism?

I have both a PS5 and a gaming PC, so let me give you an honest breakdown:
Where PC genuinely wins:
- Graphics potential - A good PC will outperform PS5, but you pay for it
- Frame rates - 120+ fps is standard on PC
- Mod support - This is huge for games like Skyrim, Fallout
- Game sales - Steam sales are legendary. My backlog cost 70% less
- Backwards compatibility - Play 20-year-old games easily
- It's also a computer - Work, productivity, etc.
- Upgradability - Swap parts over time
- Simplicity - Buy, plug in, play. No driver issues.
- Cost (sort of) - $500 PS5 vs $1000-1500 equivalent PC
- Exclusives - Spider-Man, God of War, etc. (though many come to PC now)
- Couch gaming - Better living room experience
- No cheaters - Console multiplayer has fewer hackers
- Consistency - Games are optimized for the hardware
Where console wins:
The real question for you:
"Single player games and some shooters with friends"
- If friends are on PS5: Get PS5 (crossplay exists but easier if same platform)
- If friends are on PC: Get PC
- If playing solo mostly: Either works, depends on budget
My recommendation:
If your budget is under $800, get the PS5. A PC in that range won't outperform it.
If you can spend $1200-1500, PC gives you more in the long run.
The honest truth: I play my PS5 more because it's just easier to grab the controller and go. But when I want the best experience, I use PC.
Neither choice is wrong. Don't let Reddit make you feel bad about console.
