Why do all my houseplants keep dying? I water them regularly

I have killed probably 15 houseplants in the last 2 years. I water them about twice a week and put them near the window. They always start out fine then start getting yellow leaves and wilting. I even killed a succulent. What am I doing wrong?

I can almost guarantee the problem from your description: you're overwatering.

"I water them about twice a week" is a huge red flag. Most houseplants die from TOO MUCH water, not too little.

Here's what's happening:

  • Roots sit in wet soil too long

  • They can't breathe and start rotting

  • Root rot prevents water uptake

  • Plant wilts (ironically looks like it needs water)

  • You water more

  • Plant dies
  • Yellow leaves + wilting + regular watering = classic overwatering symptoms.

The fix - Don't water on a schedule:

    1. Stick your finger 1-2 inches into the soil

    2. If it's dry, water

    3. If it's moist, wait

    4. For succulents, wait until soil is COMPLETELY dry

    Other common mistakes:

  • Pots without drainage holes - Water has nowhere to go

  • Too big of a pot - Excess soil stays wet too long

  • Not enough light - "Near the window" might not be enough

  • Decorative cache pots - Water pools at bottom
  • Best starter plants that tolerate neglect:

  • Pothos (nearly impossible to kill)

  • Snake plant (water every 2-3 weeks)

  • ZZ plant (thrives on neglect)

  • Spider plant (very forgiving)

My rule of thumb:

When you think "I should water this," wait 2-3 more days. Seriously.

I killed every plant I owned until I learned this. Now I have 40+ plants thriving because I basically ignore them. Less love = more alive.
