Is it worth learning React in 2024 or should I learn something else?

I know HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript pretty well. Everyone says learn React but I've also heard people saying it's declining and things like Svelte or Vue are better. I want to be job-ready - what should I actually focus on? Based in Chicago if that matters for the job market.

I've been a senior frontend dev for 8 years and have hired many junior developers. Here's my honest take:

Learn React. Period.

Here's why:

  • React has ~40% of the frontend market share

  • 80%+ of frontend job postings mention React

  • The ecosystem (Next.js, React Native) is massive

  • Most companies aren't switching away from React anytime soon
  • The "React is dying" narrative is overblown. Yes, Svelte and Vue are great. Yes, some developers prefer them. But:

  • Vue jobs: ~15% of postings

  • Svelte jobs: ~2% of postings

  • React jobs: Still dominant by far

For Chicago specifically:
Just checked LinkedIn - 847 React jobs vs 156 Vue jobs vs 23 Svelte jobs. The numbers speak for themselves.

My recommended path:

  1. Learn React fundamentals well

  2. Build 2-3 solid projects

  3. Learn Next.js (huge right now)

  4. Add TypeScript

  5. THEN explore Vue/Svelte if interested

You can always learn other frameworks later. Get hired first, then expand your skills on the job. React is your fastest path to employment right now.
