Is 30 too old to learn guitar or have I missed my window?

Always wanted to learn guitar but never had time. I'm 30 now and I keep seeing videos of 8 year olds shredding. Is it pointless to start this late? My goal isn't to be a rock star, just want to play songs at campfires and maybe jam with friends.

I started learning at 34 and I'm so glad I did. You absolutely have NOT missed any window.

Reality check on those kid prodigies:

  • They've been playing 4-6 hours a day since age 5

  • You're not competing with them

  • Most professional musicians started as adults anyway

  • For campfire songs and jamming? A few months of practice and you're there
  • Why adults actually learn better in some ways:

  • Better discipline and practice habits

  • Understand music theory concepts faster

  • Financially can afford better equipment and lessons

  • Know exactly what you want to play

  • Don't have mom forcing you to practice scales
  • Your goal of campfire songs is very achievable:

  • Learn 4 chords: G, C, D, Em

  • These play literally hundreds of songs

  • Wonderwall, Horse with No Name, Ring of Fire, Knockin' on Heaven's Door

  • 3-6 months of regular practice = campfire ready
  • Getting started:

    1. Get a decent acoustic ($150-300 range - Yamaha FG800, Fender CD-60)

    2. YouTube is your friend - JustinGuitar is excellent and free

    3. 15-30 minutes a day beats 3 hours on weekends

    4. Your fingers will hurt for 2-3 weeks, then calluses form

    5. Don't buy an expensive guitar until you know you'll stick with it

    People who started "late":
  • Tom Morello started at 17

  • Wes Borland started at 13

  • Countless musicians you'd never know started in their 20s, 30s, 40s

You have 50+ years of playing ahead of you. That's not late. That's a lifetime of music. Start today.
