How do I actually dress better as a guy without spending a fortune?
I'm 27 and still wearing graphic tees and cargo shorts everywhere. I want to look more put together but every fashion advice seems to involve $200 shirts or tells me to "find my style" which is useless. What are the actual basics I need? Budget of maybe $500 total.

Finally, a realistic budget and honest ask. Here's how to actually do this:
The basics that transform your wardrobe:
Tops ($150):
- 3 solid color t-shirts (black, white, navy) - Uniqlo, $15 each
- 2 casual button-down shirts (one white, one light blue) - Target/H&M, $30 each
- 1 crewneck sweater (neutral color) - $40
- 2 pairs dark jeans (different washes) - Levi's 511/512, $50-60 each
- 1 pair chinos (khaki or olive) - $40
- No more cargo shorts. Get regular shorts in solid colors.
- White leather sneakers (absolute game changer) - Stan Smiths or similar, $80
- One pair versatile boots (brown or tan) - Thursday Boots, $150, or cheaper alternative $70
- Brown leather belt - $30
- Basic watch - Timex/Casio, $20-50
- Fit is everything - A $30 shirt that fits beats a $200 shirt that doesn't
- Neutral colors - Black, white, navy, gray, olive, brown. Hard to screw up.
- No logos - Skip the graphic tees and branded stuff
- Keep it simple - 2-3 colors max per outfit
- Pants should break slightly at shoes - Not pooling, not high-water
- Uniqlo (best basics)
- Target's Goodfellow line
- H&M (some things)
- Levi's for jeans
- Banana Republic during sales
Bottoms ($150):
Shoes ($150):
Accessories ($50):
Rules that work:
Brands that won't break the bank:
The real secret:
Cleanliness and fit matter more than brand or cost. Iron your shirts. Keep shoes clean. Make sure nothing is too baggy or too tight.
$500 for a complete wardrobe upgrade is very doable. Start with the basics and build from there.
